Design With Refinement is a boutique interior design studio based in Portland, serving Hillsboro homeowners with full-service residential design, day-rate consulting, and shorter sessions for focused projects. We design fewer homes each year, by choice, so every project gets our full attention.
What sets our work apart
Sustainability is built into how we source. We work with American-made furniture lines, local Portland woodworkers and ceramicists, estate sales, consignment shops, and auction finds. Trade relationships give us access to the same lines other designers use. Estate sourcing gives our projects a layered, collected look that off-the-shelf furnishings cannot replicate. The result: rooms that feel personal, not pulled from a catalog, and pieces with the build quality to hold up for decades.
A clear process clients tell us is a revelation. Hiring a designer can feel opaque. We walk you through what each phase looks like, what decisions you make and when, and what the investment looks like in writing. No surprises.
Community over competition. Our founder, Refinement Wagner, serves on the JoyRx Pacific Northwest Leadership Council, chairs the CASA for Children Ambassador Board, and is an active member of IDS Portland. Good design starts with a good community, and we believe in showing up for ours.
How we work
Discovery call. A 30-minute conversation to talk through your project, your timeline, and your investment range. No charge.
Proposal and contract. A scoped proposal with phases, deliverables, and pricing in writing.
Design. Concept, schemes, sourcing, presentations. You see options. You make decisions. We handle the rest.
Procurement and install. We order, track, receive, inspect, and install. You walk into a finished room.

Mini Design Session Virtual or in-home, 2.5 hours, designed for one area you want to tackle or helping make those final decisions on a project. Flat rate, $595.

Frequently asked questions
Do you only work on large remodels? Sometimes but we primarily work with clients across all three service tiers. A Mini Session is the right entry point for one room and one question. Full-service is for whole-home or major renovation work.
Do you offer virtual design? For Mini Sessions, yes. Full-service design is conducted with in-person meetings and on-site visits.
Are your furniture sources only high-end? We source across price points. Trade access lets us hit boutique price tiers. Estate, consignment, and auction sourcing lets us find singular pieces at a fraction of retail. The mix is part of how we keep projects layered and sustainable.
Do you work with new construction? Yes. The earlier we are involved, the more we can influence the architectural details that shape how the home actually lives.
